CO Presidents Kris Young & Todd Sholeen
BARRINGTON ROTARY CLUB (BRC) LOCAL/ INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS
YEAR 2023-2024
GUESTS:
Wendy Wittkamp -Future BRC Member
Jessica Meyer- Lake Barrington Woods Sales and Marketing Director
Marilyn Parlo – Friend of Lisa Decatorsmith
Elizabeth McGrath – Prior BRC Member
FOUNDATION MINUTE:
In honor of the November 26 Giving Day, Steve Hollis highlighted the key features of donating to the Rotary Foundation where clubs can receive 2X matching grant returns based on the 2-3 year investment cycle for dollars donated by the club and club members. Translated that means for every $25 an individual member donates, the club can receive $100 for an eligible grant project. The RI Charity Navigator rating has remained so high because of the due diligence of our clubs and investors, and the fact that Rotary does not depend on middle men. Our efforts are always coordinated with other Rotary clubs.
Co-President Kris Young also honored our Paul Harris Award Club members: Mary Holcomb (+8 level), Peter Chamy (+2 level) and Burke Groom (+ 4 level).
PRESIDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Co-President Kris Young thanked Jennifer Lucas and Carol Hannagan for their successful cooking class and social gathering hosted on November 15. She also applauded all the contributors to the PJs and children’s book collection sponsored by the Companion Club in coordination with the Lake Barrington Shores (LBS) community. 35 pairs of PJs and 60 books were donated representing 40% of the contributions collected at LBS.
Kris also shared that Jeffrey Allen has agreed to act as one Co-President for the term 2025-26. The search is on for another Co-President candidate. Both candidates will be officially voted upon in December.
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Jeannie Hanson reminded everyone she would be chairing the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. She had reached out to the Barrington High School and discovered the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at the school was in need of a sponsor in 2025 specifically to fund the tee shirts that the BHS staff wear once each month identifying themselves as trusted adults available to talk with any student who desires a conversation. Acknowledging the Rotary’s focus on mental health, Jeannie shared that a gay teenager is 4 times more likely to take his/her own life than others, but with access to a trusted adult that likelihood is reduced by 40%. Co-President Todd Sholeen inquired if there was a shortage of tee shirts this year, indicating our Club may be in a position to help now.
Terry Cullum said, in addition to the December Open House being hosted by Rahab’s Daughters, they are planning a fund raiser on January 12, 2:30PM, at Top Golf in Schaumburg with $125 per person ticket. See the side panel.
Bob Lee encouraged everyone to join in the Thanksgiving Day Barrington Turkey Trot in Citizen’s Park. The event has been hosted for 17 years as a way to reinforce the gathering of families and friends for the holiday. As an extension of Barrington Giving Day winter wear and monetary donations are welcome. People can walk, run, take family photos, enjoy nature starting at 10:30AM. See the side panel.
SPEAKER/ PRESENTATION:
Jessica Meyer- Lake Barrington Woods Sales and Marketing Director
Jessica Meyer, Sales and Marketing Director for Lake Barrington Woods, walked the membership through the process of planning for alternate housing/ care as a person or a loved one ages and needs increasing levels of assistance to continue to be healthy and safe. She stressed the importance of planning now, rather than when the need is urgent.
Jessica provided an overview of the different levels of housing and urged everyone to:
- visit the communities; eat a meal
- evaluate the various service levels and amenities
- understand rental vs. buy-in options as well as the range of prices
- consult with legal, financial, insurance and family advisors
- plan for the transition.
Care levels include: independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and short term stays. The Senior Life Style handouts Jessica provided can be viewed on the link below.
