SPEAKER/ PRESENTATION: Emily Petway, Founder and Executive Director of GiveNKind
Emily Petway’s experience as a teacher in Atlanta led her to create the GiveNKind organization which reaches out to the community for usable items that are no longer needed and/or for inventory that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Her region of operations now includes the area from Rockford to Zion to Joliet. She has a paid staff of four and over 250 volunteers that help organize donations and operate the retail efforts.
GiveNKind is in its fifth year growing in Chicagoland and focusing on items that could be resold at a modest price, allowing people and organizations to shop with dignity. The new site is now in Buffalo Grove selling $6.8M YTD. There are over 500 partner organization-donors that include such businesses as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walgreens that provide clothing, personal care items, pet care items and toys. The purchases are made by organizations that support gun violence prevention, refugees and the homeless, as an example. Fees cover the essential fixed costs of GiveNKind, and there is very little of the inventory that is wasted or never finds a home. A new truck even allows for pick-ups and delivery on a small scale.
Emily closed by thanking the BRC volunteers that have helped organize inventory over time.
Julie Wilkins announced she and her husband will close on a new Grayslake home on December 13. She still plans to stay in BRC.
Elizabeth McGrath hopes to become the Executive Director of a non-profit organization that supports high-functioning, developmentally challenged adults. She has been part of the organization for many years.
Terry Cullum thanked Lew Parks, her driver, while she recovered from surgery, and generally thanked everyone that remembered Veterans Day as the holiday has special meaning to her family.
Jack Caldwell wanted to recognize the contributions of the women in the BRC, acknowledging all that has changed since women became part of the organization.
RAFFLE:
With 24 marbles and a pot of $285, Lew Parks won the $10 and reinvested it. Virginia Menzimer tried for the pot, but it wasn’t meant to be.
NEXT MEETING:
We will NOT be meeting on Thanksgiving Thursday nor the following November 30, as that is our Service week. Our next breakfast meeting will be on December 7, 1000 Hart Road, Suite 300, Barrington, IL. Kyle Kick of BStrong will be presenting.
